Countering Holiday Stress

With all of the holiday hoopla (even if we try to keep things simple) December can be a stressful month.  To alleviate some of this pressure I need to fit in some down time.  I like to kick back and relax (preferably with my feet up and under a cozy blanket.)  And in my hands there’s usually a book or inspiring magazine like this recently published issue of Art Quilting Studio.

 Art Quilting Studio Winter 2010

Inside you’ll find wonderful works from Danita (cover girl) and Ruth Rae as well as many others.  You’ll also see a couple of examples of my work in “The Last Page”, “Art Quilt Walking” and “Around the Quilting Block”.   Sewing with scraps is an addiction of mine which luckily also happens to be another great remedy for stress relief.   For me there’s nothing like the soothing rhythm of creativity to keep me feeling calm and centered…peaceful.  I’m wondering what keeps you all grounded this time of year – would love to hear your tips.

  2. I love this one, Sew Somerset and Somerset Life, the best….who am
i kidding, i find things in all of them, that make me go oooh, ahhhh!
Congrats, i am headed to the bookstore tomorrow, after my daughter’s orthodontist appt, i will have to go check this issue out.

What keeps me grounded, funny, right now it is using old family pics and making garland type cards….i am enjoying the thought and memories they evoke.

I wonder what it was like for them, at that age, what their
hopes and dreams where, when they were young and so full of hope!
I enjoy seeing bits and pieces of myself in the pics; I look a lot like my
father’s mother, so i have been told. It is like quilting, fragments of people, time and memories, blurred together….I am finding i can’t stop
making them and i have sooo many other things to do.

It is late, no early i’m headed to bed, doing the drapey, creative mediation thing…look at a few past issues and go to bed and see what
my creativity comes up with the next morning. A friend has asked me
to make some stuff to put in a shop in the Outer Banks…so
time to get the creative juices flowing.

  6. Sorry that you guys haven’t been able to find these issues yet. I usually get mine from either Barnes and Noble, A.C. Moore, Michael’s or Joannes which always carries sewing related issues. But if you don’t have any luck at these stores you can order the magazines online through Stampington.com

By the way, today was a big day in the biz – Jenny Doh (Editor-in-Chief/Director of Publishing) just announced that she’s moving on from her current position. You can visit her blog at jennydoh.typepad.com for more details.
