I love the look of crochet, but I haven’t gotten around to learning how to do it yet. Luckily, there are ways of getting around this. It’s a temporary fix since I still very much want to take crocheting lessons.
I cut some circles out of a large piece of crochet which I found for next to nothing at a flea market (I think it was a tablecloth of some sort). These lacy circles remind me of snowflakes or even sugar cookies.
The chunky texture is hefty enough to handle some embroidery details and other easy embellishments.
I made this one using felted wool scraps (from recycled sweaters) along with other recycled fabric scraps.
One tiny, metallic button makes a nice contrast against all the other soft and cozy elements.
I used a small scrap of red wool felt to cut out an even smaller heart…

Framing a circle at the center came about by chance. I love how unique design opportunities will sometimes come up unexpectedly, don’t you?

The layers are so plush and pleasing to my eye.
Here’s one that I made for my sweetheart.
It was fun winding and sewing the string around and around following the crocheted circular design.

This is such a clever idea! I have always loved your little felted pieces and how fun to incorporate them into your crochet ornament. I found a great video on YouTube that taught me how to crochet a flower, and now I just figured out how to do a heart. YouTube is great for that…I am more of a visual learner I guess. wonderful creations Becky! I have crocheted ornaments and embellished them but it’s been awhile(much easier to “purchase/repurpose” as you have done here:) ). I love the texture you added with the felt and French knots too!

Very nice, Becky. When I saw the title, I thought, “but I can’t do crochet!!” How nice to know i can do my own version. I am making a little tree for our minister who has been just wonderful to us.

What memories your comment about learning to crochet evoked, Becky! I learned when I was 19 — when my new baby daughter was napping! Bought a ‘beginning crochet’ book and some yarn and a needle, and figured it out on my own (somehow –lol!) and had made 2 small clutch purses for gifts by Christmas. All made during ‘naptimes’. What a memory. So get busy with that learning, it really is MUCH easier than knitting, believe me!!

These are so pretty Becky! They immediately reminded me of my wedding dress. My grandmother made my dress. She had a collection of vintage crocheted dresser scarves, and we cut pieces of those and used them as embellishments on the bodice of my gown. I then used some left material from my gown and more of the crocheted pieces that what were left to embellish the photo album I created from my big day. I’m hopping that one day, my girls will wear my dress!
