Sit Still

In my studio I’ve posted a little reminder that encourages me to sit still…to embrace the quiet.

I spend countless hours on this chair creating this n’ that.

While I’m sitting, I’ll often keep my hands busy making little objects.

It seems that when my hands are busy, my mind becomes settled.  This stillness soothes the soul, bringing feelings of peace within.  This calmness is balanced with an energy that fills my entire being with soft, glowing light.  A light that keeps me warm during this frigid season.  A light that allows me to see clearly when the sun is sparse during the dark winter months.

If you share my need to sit still and make things, especially things with bird images you can visit my website to get a glimpse of my sculpted clay bird necklaces.   The details for making this necklace are available in the current issue of Somerset Life.  In this article the clay material that I used is “Das”, not “Jas” as it reads in the article (sorry for the mix-up.)  Within this article you’ll also find the details on how to make a few more of my necklace projects.

  1. Great advice Becky! Sitting still is invaluable, especially for artists. I’m going to apply it to my daily routine – thanks!
I have the latest issue of Somerset Life but haven’t gotten to your article yet. I’ve been savoring every page, taking my time and ABSORBING all of it. But the sneak peak of your bird necklaces makes me want to skip ahead, haha! They are awesome – and I LOVE birds!!

  2. Lisa, I’m so impressed that you can stop yourself from skipping ahead. I don’t have this discipline, especially when it comes to looking through creative magazines. I’m sure your way feels more satisfying, and how do you do it? I’m curious to hear your tip.

  3. Hi Becky,

So wise these words, I do think we need to challenge our energy this way.
I get anxious to begin with…great advice!

I love seeing glimpses of your space, where you release your talent!

I love birds and thought the ones you made and featured were special,
    letting your art sing.

I could use some peace, my head is filled with ideas….time to sit down and be still( mind) as my hands take over.

  4. the next few months i will be taking on online painting course and hope to
‘sit still’ to focus my creative time on just that. sometimes there is so much going on that it’s hard to create peacefully. the article was beautiful and your birds so gentle.

  5. I’m constantly needing to remind myself to sit … still. And I do find that when my hands are busy, my mind stills and my breathing slows and I achieve a feeling of calm and peacefulness. Perhaps I would do well to copy your example and post this in my studio!

  7. Hi Becky! That is so true and very healing to the creative mind. Sometimes when I’m sitting at my art table, I get so involved with being in this state that I’m drawn to stitching something little while I reflect. Thanks for sharing you links. I’ll be sure to read up on your wonderful creations. 🙂

  8. Honestly Becky, I don’t have any tips – I think it’s just one of those things that “happens” when you get old like me, haha! I’ve become so “picky” about the magazines I buy (when I was a young thing I used to buy ALL of them EVERY month – hate to think of how much $$ I wasted). Anyway, I know it’ll be a while before I find another one my picky self will want to buy, so I try to make them last as long as possible. Does that make any sense? Hope so – if not, just chalk it up to one crazy old lady!

    Blessings,

  9. sitting still (as long as the chair isn’t too close to the ice cream sandwiches in the freezer) is definitely great advice!!! your projects are gorgeous, and always inspire me, becky! thanks for sharing your creative self with us!!

  10. Funny, I always start at the end of the magazine…what does that mean?
    lol

I do like to glance thru then go back and read the articles/art that inspires me , then go back and savor the art that speaks to me.

Lisa, I don’t think age has anything to do with it…i think it is just having more sense to save cents on crafting supplies.

    I, also love the mica bird…really gorgeous~
