Sunny Surprise

Featured in the latest issue of Somerset Life (Oct/Nov/Dec) I created my own seed packets using wax paper, parchment paper,  paper scraps/ephemera and other odds n’ends.  This project came about soon after I received some store bought seed packets from generous Ellen in the mail…from mail to magazine, this was such a fun and unexpected occurrance (I love it when ideas just pop up in your head!)   And speaking of unexpected things, this project made its way onto the cover…thank you Stampington for this sunny surprise!

Inside this same issue of Somerset Life you’ll find another project of mine which uses recycled materials (shopping bag handles, old buttons or the extra ones that often come attached to new clothes) to create bracelets and a cuff.  I love making something new using something old!

The how-to instructions for both of these projects are included within the articles.   And within the article,  “A Seed Packet Surprise” you’ll also find the how-to instructions to create my “grow” necklace.  Happy creating!

  1. Oh boy! I am feeling the inspiration flowing and the excitement building. Can’t wait to get this copy and see your pieces up close. I have been wanting to make some cuffs for a long time now – they have been on “the list” – now I am truly inspired. Thank you, thank you, thank you! And the seed packets are wonderful. You have made me more aware of all the materials I used to throw away and now save. I’ve even got my husband asking before he throws something away – “Are you saving this?” I love it!

Yes, yes, yes!!! Congratulations, Becky. I love that you are the cover feature, too. The projects are both wonderful and just your style of simple materials, gentle and softened colors and WORDS! I am so pleased for you.If there are two things I love to create with, they are words and birds (I didn’t realize that would rhyme!)

Thank you so much for your kind note the other day. I am still fighting off an ear/sinus infection (a new one for me) and to feel so understood touched me at a very deep level.

Sending you big hugs. You are such an inspiration!

  5. YEA!!! I am leaving the day job to hit the bookstore today to get my copy. So happy for you, Becky. I bet you were thrilled about the cover too. These are REALLY pretty. You use alot of neutrals and rich earthtones but I love how you added a splash of color in the seed packets. I’m always inspired by how you use recycled materials. I pat myself on the back when I “shop” my own studio. Then, there is you…wax paper, cereal box inserts…You are amazing!

p.s. – yes, I have finally started a blog. I left the email you have though. I’m still getting in the groove of checking my new gmail.

    Becky,
Congrats on being a cover girl! I LOVE the seed packets, that is such a wonderful idea. I have to say that on looking back on the art that has inspired me to buy these magazines, I never realized before that your artwork is a large part of it. I love all of your work and am always on the hunt to find something to buy so I can recreate (in my own way) your projects. I was just at an antique fair in Minneapolis and found a beautiful old change purse!!! Not that easy to find!
    Hugs,
    Ivy
