Altered Oatmeal Box

Bill regularly enjoys having a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast…me, I like something more substantial to bite into.  Having grown up in an Asian household I’m used to eating all kinds of savory and somewhat odd breakfast meals consisting of rice (or porridge) with a fried egg drizzled with soy sauce and maybe some kind of sauteed vegetable from the night before.  I’m a big fan of leftovers for breakfast – pizza and pie are at the top of my list.  I know these choices aren’t exactly healthy, especially at breakfast time, but I try to be mindful of my portions and I don’t do it every day…practicing balance is a daily thing for me.  Anyway, back to the empty oatmeal box which I used…

…to create this hanging bird house project.  Bill thinks the shape of my house looks very much like the Pope’s hat, and I can definitely see what he means.  So, this project can either be a bird house or a hat…whatever you want it to be.

Making houses makes me feel warm and cozy inside…it’s my own comfort food, just like having a bowl of oatmeal.  What things bring you quiet happiness?

  1. Becky, this bird house is too cute! I have to say when I saw the oatmeal box I think of “years” ago my mom made me a halloween costume…I dream of Jeannie costume, red & pink just like the show. We watched an episode together while she took notes. The hat she made from an oatmeal box and it had a place for my blonde pony tail to poke through…I still have it. 🙂 Quiet happiness? Cool enough to leave the windows open to hear the fountains & the birds on a Sunday afternoon with the kitties & Russ. 🙂

  2. How sweet; I love your style of using what is on hand! I’m a savory bkfst girl, too. Quiet happiness today was seeing a tiny black baby rabbit in my back yard and going out front and seeing a huge tortoise. It felt magically to see them, serene in nature. I hope to spy the rabbit again, sooo adorable.
I did mange to get a photo of the tortoise; hubby thinks it is a snapping turtle. I was cautious~

  5. Becky,
Lovely project. We are hooked on oatmeal but like Irish oatmeal which has more bite but no nice oatmeal box! I am also a big fan of savory for breakfast but I also love real maple syrup on my oatmeal!
I need to see if there are any Quaker Oatmeal lovers in my neighborhood!
    Big hugs,

  6. So pretty. I love seeing such beautiful things on a Monday morning, it makes a great start to the week.
I love breakfast and never skip it. Love a good cook up, bacon, eggs, toast but I also love my cereal and I have been know to eat the odd piece of left over pizza for breakfast.
Quiet happiness for me is sitting in my craft room late at night, just me playing with my crafty stuff.
    love me 🙂

  7. Pie has always been a big favourite in our house for breakfast – at Thanksgiving I had to make two pies, one for dessert and one for breakfast!
I love what you did with the oatmeal box Becky – great idea!

Becky, you continually astound me with your vision and talents…what a unique idea…who would have thought..an oatmeal box, one of my favorite breakfasts with lots of butter (uh oh-should’ve put fruit on instead-lol). Lovely piece sprinkled with happiness! I find my quiet happiness knowing that people dear to me are happy and well…then everything else falls into place.

Quiet peace — I love the “spa” channel on Sirius radio, I love the rain (which is indulging me a lot right now) and I love the first few sips of a warm chai tea. Mmmm. Oh — and I love your hat/house …. lol.

  15. This is lovely, like all of your pieces! My husband is a fan of oatmeal in the morning too, and he likes what the real stuff, no quick oats for him. I call it John Wayne oatmeal because you have to be tough enough to eat it!

  19. Becky, this brought back memories. When I was a little girl, I used to make doll cradles out of the oatmeal boxes. 🙂
